Literature Text

A week passed by and very little happened in that time. That day of talking that Eva and I shared and made things very quiet between us, and for obvious reasons. Eva had gone about her normal business of practicing spells and potions while I went to work on house maintenance. Over the next week, I would be fixing the roof and patching up the wall where there was a draft. I was good with my hands...and I felt like I needed to do something for Eva after all that she had done for me. I had been so busy with my own chores and work that I had completely lost track of time...so when Eva came skipping into the den wearing her cute witch outfit, I was taken completely by surprise.

"Hey Christian!" Eva cried. I looked up from the book I was reading and looked her over carefully.
"Well, you look awful cute, Eva...but what's the occasion?" I asked. Eva raised her arms and then threw them down in frustration, groaning angrily.
"Did you seriously forget what day it is today?!" She cried. I turned my head and looked at the calendar on the wall behind me and saw that it was, in fact...
"Oh no!" I cried. "It's HALLOWEEN!" Eva stomped forward and smacked me upside the head sharply.
"Bingo!" She shouted. "You also promised that you would go trick-or-treating with me tonight because it's my first time!" I nodded in defeat. I had forgotten all about that promise and I didn't have a single costume to wear.
"I'm so sorry for forgetting Eva." I cried. Eva sighed.

"I'm guessing that you don't have anything to wear either, right?" She asked. I nodded sadly.
"Sorry...I guess I won't be able to go with you, because I can't go out without being in disguise." I moaned. Eva suddenly grinned and looked at me in a very funny way...making me very nervous.
"You know...I might could..."
"NO!" I snapped. "You aren't turning me into Alice again! I'm done being Alice!" Eva groaned and then began tapping her foot on the floor.
"You're no fun, Christian." She moaned. I shook my head fiercely.
"You can make me a costume or give me something to go as...but Alice can NOT be involved." I snapped. Eva groaned and then began pacing the room, thinking. She then stopped in her tracks and snapped her fingers. Out of thin air a small cauldron appeared. She grabbed the cauldron and lifted it up...it was thin and it looked easy to carry...I knew what she was going to use to carry candy now. She skipped over to me and stared me straight in the eyes.
"Just remember Christian...you brought this on yourself."
"What are you talking about?!" I asked quickly. It was too late...she did it.

*snap*

There was a crack like a whip and an unpleasant feeling all over my body. I felt the world grow larger, my body reshape and remold itself. I then felt my senses and size change as well. Soon, I was a small brown kitten once again, looking up in shocked horror at the giant Eva standing over me, looking down with a big grin.
"EVA!" I screamed. Without another word, she reached down and picked me up by the scruff of the neck, carrying me over to the kitchen table and setting me on the wooden table so that I was now level with her stomach.
"Calm down, Christian." She said. She then walked over to the refrigerator and started rummaging through it. I wasn't about to calm down...I was outraged. I leaped on my four paws and started hissing at her.
"HOW DARE YOU!" I hissed. "Why'd you change me into a kitten again! I'm sick of this, Eva! I'd like to go just ONE DAY without being changed into something!" Eva pulled out a bottle of something and then pulled a bowl from the cabinet. She set the bowl down and poured the contents of the bottle into the bowl.
"Would you settle down?" She snapped back. "As you'll recall...you spent a whole week without being my test subject...so I think you can deal with just one night as a kitten." I opened my mouth to shout back at her when she turned and set the bowl in front of me. It was filled with milk...and my tongue got tied at the sight of the white liquid. "Drink that and settle down, won't you?" I tried to look away...but something in me made me want to drink the milk. Before I knew it...I had my head over the bowl and was lapping the milk up like the kitten I was. I was beyond embarrassed for myself...I was straight up humiliated.
"Why are you giving me milk?" I demanded. "Just want to embarrass me further?" Eva shook her head.
"Actually no...I gave you milk so that you would just calm yourself down...the embarrassment part is just an added bonus." I groaned and walked away from the half-finished milk bowl.
"Okay Eva, you win...I'll go with you." I gave in. Eva smiled and lifted me up by the scruff of the neck again. She then placed me lightly in the cauldron bucket that she was using. I looked up and managed to lift my head up and peer out from the rim of the bucket. Eva lifted the cauldron up and held it and eye level.
"Then we should get going...the sun is setting and we have to get to the suburbs." She tucked the cauldron under her arm, with me still inside and took off for the door, grabbing her broom on the way out.
"Eva, are you planning on flying us there?" I asked quickly. She nodded to me.
"Of course, silly...how else are we going to get to the city on time? We'll never make it by just walking." I peered up from the cauldron again.
"But don't you think people will be suspicious of a witch flying around?!" I asked. Eva laughed.
"Not if I land in a wooded area where no one can see me, they wont." Without waiting for me to protest, she sat down on the broom with the cauldron in her lap and took off into the setting sun.

When we got to the suburbs, I felt nervous. This was close to the same area that I used to live...I recognized some of the streets...and one or two of the houses. The sight must have been quite something for Eva as well, because she was too distracted by the sights, and hadn't even gone to a house to get candy yet. However, hundreds of other children in costumes noticed her and me...and constantly came up to speak.
"Aw! Look at the cute kitten!"
"Can I pet him?"
"I love your costume, miss!"
Eva was simply eating up all the attention. Me personally, I felt a little exposed. Every time Eva let someone pet me I felt like I was being violated somehow...like they were invading my privacy...and yet I couldn't help but purr in response.
"Don't pretend like you don't enjoy the attention, Christian." Eva whispered to me. I meowed in response...not wanting to actually speak. "Oh, Christian, there's no one around...you can talk."
"Stop it, Eva...you don't need to display me to everyone that you meet." I then remembered the reason we were even out. "You haven't even gone trick-or-treating yet...aren't you going to get any candy?" I asked. Suddenly Eva gave me a nervous look.

"Right...about that...um..." she then began fiddling with her dress. "How do I do it?" I gave her a stunned look.
"You seriously don't know how to trick-or-treat!?" I cried. Eva shook her head.
"No...I've never done it. All I know is that I need a costume and something to carry candy in." I groaned and popped my head up from the inside of the cauldron. I looked and noticed a house just across the street and grinned.
"Okay, go to that house." I whispered. Holding the broom in one hand and the cauldron in the other, she ran over to the house and stopped at the steps.
"Okay, now what?" She asked. I laughed to myself, still unable to believe just how lost she was about this.
"See that button by the door?" I asked. Eva was very old fashion...the cottage we lived in didn't have a doorbell, so she had never seen or used one before. This would be fun. "Press it...and then say trick-or-treat when the door opens." Eva nodded nervously.
"Oh! So the button opens the door?" She asked. I stifled a snicker and nodded.
"Something like that." I answered. She reached out with her broom hand and used her finger to push down on the button.

*DING DONG*

"OH GOD!" Eva cried, leaping away from the door. I instantly began laughing my head off. Eva glared at me angrily. "You knew that would happen, didn't you?!" I couldn't stop laughing.
"That was PERFECT!" I cried. Eva was so distraught that she didn't even notice an old man open the door to the house.
"Can I help you?" He asked kindly. Eva looked up and blushed.
"Um...trick-or-treat?" She asked nervously. The man smiled and held out a handful of chocolates. Eva didn't do a thing...so I knew I would have to help her out a little. I stuck my head out of the cauldron and looked up at the man.
"Meow!" I meowed loudly. The man looked down and noticed me and then grinned.
"Oh, what an adorable kitten you have. He reached out and pet my head gently, while his other hand placed the candy in the cauldron. I then dropped back down into the cauldron with the candy. "You have a good night now, miss." The old man said.
"Thank you." Eva called back. The door closed behind the man and Eva beamed. She looked down at me in the cauldron with a smile that was incredibly joyful.
"Christian, that was AWESOME!" She cried. I smiled back up at her.
"That was trick-or-treating." I told her simply. She brightened up under that big hat of hers and looked to the next house.
"Then, let's get going! I can't wait to hit some more houses!" I snickered and dropped back down into the cauldron, expecting to see a great deal of candy raining down on me for a while.

Before long, I was practically swimming in a cauldron full of candy of all types and colors. I wasn't upset though, because each time candy would drop down on me, Eva would laugh and scratch me behind my ears, smiling happily. Every now and then, a person would see me in the cauldron and give me a pat on the head as well. To be honest...it was really fun. For once, I kind of enjoyed being changed by Eva.
"Christian...I'm having the time of my life!" She cried. She reached in and scratched me carefully behind my ears and I purred, enjoying the feel of it.
"Well, I'm glad that you are." I laughed. "I'm having a good time too."
"Are you sure?" Eva asked. "You're not trick-or-treating with me...you're just watching." I laughed and looked back up at her kindly.
"It's okay...I don't mind."

Suddenly, a group of people went dashing by us. One was dressed as the grim reaper, one was dressed as a pirate, and the other was dressed as Scream. They looked older than Eva...about my age...and they were chattering away happily about something. They stopped and faced Eva.
"Hey, you going to the Haunted Asylum?!" They shouted.
"The what?" Eva asked. They gasped and stared at her dumbfounded.
"It's only the coolest Halloween attraction this year!"
"Yeah, they got this old abandoned asylum from like...the 40's and are using it as a Halloween attraction!"
"Everyone's going, you should come to!"
"Unless of course you're...scared." I suddenly perked up my ears. I knew that I had heard that voice before...could it be someone I knew from somewhere? Maybe it was an old school friend? However, before I had time to ponder this, they took off running in the direction they were going earlier, leaving me and Eva alone in the street.

"Let's go check it out!" Eva cried. I, on the other hand, was a little skeptical.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" I asked.
"You're not afraid are you, Christian?" She asked with a grin. I snorted back at her.
"Oh yeah? We'll see who gets scared...fine...let's go see what they got." As she took off running after the group of teenagers, I couldn't help but have a very bad feeling in the pit of my stomach about what awaited us at the asylum.
Chapter 14

So Eva and Christian finally get to spend Halloween together...and boy what an adventure it turns out to be. I'm gonna be honest with you...I had a ball writing this out. Just the idea that Eva has NEVER gone trick or treating before was too fun to play with and experiment with. Christian takes advantage of that here. Also, what happens when Chrsitian forgets his promises and doesn't get a costume together? Well, you'll see.

There is a picture for this chapter that :iconxxphantomriderxx: is working on, but it isn't finished yet. For the time being, here is the next best picture for this chapter. I hope that you all enjoy.

This was so sweet! Oh dear, the asylum doesn't sound like a good place to be...
